No-meeting culture is a trap
Recently I have been seeing a lot of chat about no-meeting culture, promoting async comms via Slack as the Gen Z vision as the future of work.
This is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard for not only career advancement, but this could put general societal cohesion in jeopardy.
- Creating alignment is not just about getting everyone in a room to agree, it’s about building professional connections with people you will be working with for possibly the rest of your career. Async-only robs you of the opportunity to build these relationships.
- Many use async culture as a way to avoid professional comms development.
- People suck at writing.
- It’s impossible to understand the vibe.
- People are much better at lying in written form.
- A huge percentage of marriages are to co-workers.
- Async culture will make us much more vulnerable to the golden age of deepfake scams.
- If you don’t like to waste time reading banter on text chat, you will probably miss something important.
